This dissertation includes four essays concerned with empirical health economics research questions. The first chapter presents a general introduction and a summary of the entire thesis. The second chapter deals with the question whether education causally affects health. It is a joint research project with Hendrik Jürges and Steffen Reinhold. The third chapter analyzes the emergence of health inequality in early childhood using panel data from the United Kingdom. The fourth chapter is dedicated to the research question whether there is a causal link between fertility and mental health in old age.
