Oxygen-containing yttrium hydride (YHx:O) thin films exhibit photochromic behaviour, in which transparent films reversibly darken upon illumination by visible and ultraviolet radiation. This feature has motivated intense research, due to its potential application in ophthalmic lenses and smart windows. The commercialization of such applications requires a thorough understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms, as well as how these are affected by ambient conditions. Through the work presented in this thesis, a reliable method was developed for the investigation of temperature- and irradiation-dependent changes in the photochromic effect of YHx:O.
