Plastic debris is one of the more visible pollutants in the aquatic environment. While much attention has been given to marine environments, fewer studies have explored the fate of plastics in freshwater environments. This is surprising since most of the plastic that is found in the oceans has a terrestrial source and is transported to the sea by rivers and estuaries.
