The efficient depolymerization of lignocellulosic biomass to fermentable sugars by enzymatic hydrolysis is a key step in the transition towards a more environmentally friendly and sustainable bio-economy. However, the complexity and recalcitrant nature of the substrate limit enzyme performance on lignocellulosic plant biomass, and at present the enzyme cocktails required for depolymerization represent a major cost in the production of biomass-based chemicals and fuels.
