1 h 45 minKader Attia is a French-Algerian artist living in Berlin; his latest projects were shown at the dOCUMENTA (13), at the Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam and at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin. Ana Teixeira Pinto is a writer from Lisbon, Portugal currently living in Berlin; she is a contributor to Mousse Magazine, Art-Agenda, E-flux Journal, and Frieze/de amongst other publications. While living in the Congo, artist Kader Attia was given a piece of Kuba raffia cloth to which patches of Vichy fabric had been applied in order to mend a tear. Struck by the poignancy of this artifact, he initiated a decade long research on the repair, as a cultural practice and on the ontological status of repaired objects. For the talk at the Oslo Academy of Art, Attia, together with critic Ana Teixeira Pinto, will elaborate on how his project expanded from the empirical notion of repair to the ethical questions concerning re-appropriation and reparations; and on how the concept of repair could be used as a pivotal notion for an alternative reading of modernism, opposing the totalizing unity of the cultural icon expressed in the notion of the ready-made.
