Current forest structure and previous land-use in the south-east part of Trillemarka-Rollagsfjell Nature Reserve.

Mennesket har hatt ein påverknad på skogen i fleire tusen år, men dei siste hundreåra har denne påverknaden vorte intensivert som ein følgje av eit aukande folketal og teknologisk utvikling. I dag fins det få skogområde som er heilt upåverka av mennesket. Skogbruket er ei forholdsvis ny type forstyrring, som bryt skogdynamikken på ein annan måte enn naturlege forstyrringar som til dømes brann, vindfellingar og insektåtak, og som medfører ein nedgang i nøkkelhabitat som er viktige for å behalde det biologiske mangfaldet. Hundreår med seterdrift har òg medført ein stor påverknad på skogareala då nyryddingar og ulik beite- og hogstintensitet har endra konkurransehøva mellom skogsartane og ført til ein meir lysopen skogstruktur. Epifyttisk lav brukast ofte som indikatorart på kor urørt skogen er, og dei seinare åra har det også vorte vanleg å bruke talet avverkingstubbar i eit område for å måle graden av påverknad. Denne oppgåva har som mål å 1) skildre dagens skogstruktur i sørlege delar Trillemarka-Rollagsfjell naturreservat i Buskerud og prøve å finne om det er forskjell i skogstruktur mellom område med ulik historisk bakgrunn og 2) belyse korleis tidlegare menneskeleg aktivitet, i form av hogst og seterdrift, har påverka dagens skogstruktur. Oppgåva byggjer på undersøkingar av femten prøveflater som er lokalisert til område med ulik skoghistorikk, område som anten har vore påverka av brann i nyare tid, seterdrift, eller ingen av delane. Dendrokronologiske analysar av 366 kjerneprøver og relaskopering vart brukt for å finne alder, respektive grunnflate og volum, medan lavarten sprikeskjegg (Bryoria nadvonikiana) og avverkingsstubbar vart registrert langs transekt. Totalt vart 3 600 ha inventert. Man have profoundly influenced the world’s forests for thousands of years, but in the last centuries this influence has intensified as a result of increasing population and technological development, and there are few forests areas today, that are completely unaltered. Forestry is a relatively new type of disturbance that breaks the forest dynamics in a different way than natural disturbances such as e.g. fire, windthrow and insect outbreaks. A consequence of this is a decrease in important key habitats that are needed to sustain biodiversity. Centuries with management of summer farms has also led to a major influence on the forest area, as clearing of land and different grazing- and logging intensities have altered the competition among forest species, which in turn has led to a more open and light-exposed forest structure. Epiphytic lichens are often used as an indicator of forest naturalness and continuity, and in recent years it also has become common to use the number of tree-stumps in an area as a measure of logging impact. This thesis aims to 1) describe the current forest structure in the southern parts of Trillemarka-Rollagsfjell Nature Reserve in South Norway, and to try find if the present forest structure differ between areas with different historical background, and 2) to estimate how previous human land-use, in terms of logging and summer farming, has influenced the current forest structure. The thesis is based on field studies in forest areas with different histories, i.e. areas that certainly have been affected by fire in recent time, areas with summer farming activity and areas not affected by neither fire nor summer farming in recent time. Dendrochronolgy of 366 core samples and the use of a relascope was used to determine basal area, volume and age in the forest, while the lichen Bryoria nadvornikiana and tree stumps was recorded along transect lines.
