Entre capilla y misión. Jesuitas en la periferia de Arequipa en el siglo XVII

International audienceThis paper studies the ambiguity of the status of the Jesuits in the peripheryof Arequipa in the seventeenth century. The Jesuits, owners of a farm nearArequipa, confront the secular clergy, about the administration of thesacraments to the Indians who live and work within their property. But thebishop claims the jurisdiction on these indigenous parishioners. Throughthe sacraments and evangelization, the Jesuits control indigenous labour andsettlement within the land of the Company. The property of the land and thechapel works then as a limit of ecclesiastical jurisdiction. The Jesuits act asmissionaries, but also as any jealous owner of the religious administration oftheir Indians. Therefore, in this recently Christianized space we have severalmodalities of religious administration of the Indians, depending on theownership of the local temple, the status of the land and those who work it.The Jesuits use the ambiguity of the legal status of the Indians, who do notbelong to any reduction of the area, and their own status. As missionaries andowners, they mobilize their capacity to administer the sacraments in order tocontrol the people and subject them to the territory.Este artículo estudia la ambigüedad del estatuto de los jesuitas en la periferiade Arequipa en el siglo XVII, a través de un conflicto jurisdiccional con elobispo. Los jesuitas, propietarios de una chacra cerca de Arequipa, enfrentanal clero secular, acerca de la administración de los sacramentos a los indios queviven y trabajan en ella. Según el obispo, dependen de la parroquia de indiosde la ciudad. La Compañía de Jesús controla, a través de los sacramentos yde su desempeño como evangelizadores, la mano de obra indígena y supermanencia en un espacio rural, propiedad privada de la Compañía. Lapropiedad privada de la tierra y de la capilla funciona como un límite de lajurisdicción eclesiástica. Los jesuitas actúan como misioneros, pero tambiéncomo cualquier propietario celoso de la administración religiosa de sus indios.En este espacio recientemente cristianizado coexisten varias modalidades deadministración religiosa de los indios, que dependen de la propiedad deltemplo local, del estatuto de la tierra y de los que la trabajan. Los jesuitasutilizan la ambigüedad del estatuto de los indios, que no pertenecen a ningunareducción de la zona, y su propio estatuto de misioneros y de propietarios,capaces de administrar los sacramentos con el fin de controlarlos y sujetarlosal territorio
