International audienceThis paper studies the ambiguity of the status of the Jesuits in the peripheryof Arequipa in the seventeenth century. The Jesuits, owners of a farm nearArequipa, confront the secular clergy, about the administration of thesacraments to the Indians who live and work within their property. But thebishop claims the jurisdiction on these indigenous parishioners. Throughthe sacraments and evangelization, the Jesuits control indigenous labour andsettlement within the land of the Company. The property of the land and thechapel works then as a limit of ecclesiastical jurisdiction.
