International audienceThis article focuses on the development of organology, the science of musical instruments, over the course of the twentieth century, and on the specific understanding of musical instruments that this science promotes. It examines how this development is intertwined with the museum, looking into the ways in which the norms that structure the museumization and the exhibition of objects in the museum have affected the representations of musical instruments, in particular by influencing the development of a scientific classification that leaves out the cultural and the musical aspects of the instruments.
