International audienceThis paper studies the strongly affirmed territorial dimension characterizing the cults of village gods and goddesses in a region of the Indian Himalayas. The logic behind such ritual territories is examined in its relationship to the various political powers that hold sway successively in the region: Hindu kingdoms, British colonial administration, and India’s modern democratic State. By using oral narratives, colonial manuscripts, and ethnographic data, the author brings to light the way territories have been conceived, organized and transformed throughout these periods, following a multiplicity of often interrelated logics-ritual, political, fiscal, administrative and electoral ones.La pioggia negli otto villaggi.
