Autorité et déplacement : esthétique de la modernité chez Thomas Hardy

International audienceThomas Hardy’s novel Jude the Obscure (1895) is about displacement. First, it deals with geographical displacement as the eponymous protagonist wanders through the South West of England, from village to city, in Hardy’s Wessex. This endless displacement in space both illustrates and triggers the dislocation of the protagonist’s identity: who is Jude after all? Where does he come from? Where is he going to? As Jude’s dreams are incessantly thwarted and his course repeatedly diverted, tragedy becomes his destiny, dispossessing him of his own will. Meaning gets blurred, too, under the influence of other texts that interfere with the narrative voice. Among these the Bible holds pride of place, making Jude a Job-like character.The uncertain, wavering identity of the main character in Jude the Obscure foreshadows the questioning of the figure of the author: Hardy was a nineteenth century novelist with such works as Under the Greenwood Tree, A Pair of Blue Eyes, Far from the Madding Crowd, but a twentieth century poet as the Collected Poems well show. An aesthetic displacement is therefore perceptible, from one period–that of the Victorian novel–to another–that of modern fiction; from the convention of the happy ending to the more subversive rewriting of tragedy; from one genre–fiction–to another–poetry. Moreover, by silencing his main representative–the narrator–as well as his creature–the protagonist–at the end of Jude the Obscure, Hardy the author seems to challenge his own authority, thus raising the question of authority and authorship. The figure of the author falters, all the more so as the simple and discreet existence Hardy led stood in sharp contrast to his protagonists’ scandalous lives: this could be just another figure of displacement, in the same way as the third person displaced and silenced the “I” that should have been used in the autobiography entitled The Life of Thomas Hardy.Jude the Obscure (1895) de Thomas Hardy est un roman du déplacement. Déplacement géographique d’abord puisque le protagoniste éponyme va de la campagne à la ville et de ville en ville, comme errant dans les terres du Wessex si cher à l’auteur. Ce déplacement spatial incessant tout à la fois illustre et conduit à la dislocation de l’identité du protagoniste : qui est Jude ? D’où vient-il et où va-t-il ? Les pistes se brouillent à la croisée d’autres textes, tantôt nés du même auteur tels Tess of the D’Urbervilles dont l’héroïne est comme un double de Jude, tantôt provenant de la Bible en regard de laquelle Jude devient un autre Job.Ce vacillement de l’identité du personnage annonce le questionnement sur la figure de l’auteur : Hardy, romancier victorien (Under the Greenwood Tree, Far from the Madding Crowd) est aussi un poète moderne (Collected Poems) comme cela se pressent déjà à la lecture de bon nombre de nouvelles ainsi que des derniers romans. La modernité de Hardy se perçoit dans un déplacement esthétique qui entraîne le lecteur d’une époque à une autre : du roman victorien au roman moderne, du happy ending de convention à la réécriture du tragique. Le déplacement discernable dans l’univers fictionnel de Hardy conduit alors à la mise en question de l’autorité de l’auteur (authority/authorship) puisque l’indécision générique et stylistique qui entoure son œuvre rend son identité insaisissable. Qui est Hardy ? C’est cette interrogation que Siegfried Sassoon mit en vers dans le poème “At Max Gate”. L’opposition entre la vie rangée de l’auteur et le cheminement tumultueux de ses personnages est une autre figure du déplacement – à l’image du « je » autobiographique mis sous silence par le recours à la troisième personne dans The Life and Work of Thomas Hardy
