After carbon dioxide and methane, nitrous oxide, is the third most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Nitrous oxide contributes to the greenhouse gas effect as well as to ozone depletion. The major portion of anthropogenic N2O emissions are stimulated by the use of nitrogen fertilizers in agriculture. The main processes for N2O production in soils are nitrification and denitrification. Various environmental and management factors such as precipitation, soil type, tillage, and crop residues affect these processes. N2O emissions can occur substantially in the post-harvest period.
