DIVERSIDAD, DISTRIBUCIÓN Y REPRODUCCIÓN DE HELICONIAS

Heliconias are ornamental species that produce inflorescences very appreciated in floriculture. Plants can be grown to produce cut flowers, or they can be planted in parks and gardens as part of landscaping. In addition to their inflorescences, heliconias produce useful foliage for various purposes, and their rhizomes can be used as food or medicine. It is estimated that there are about 250 species of the only genus, Heliconia, within the family Heliconiaceae of the order of the Zingiberales, distributed mainly in tropical America, and some islands of the Pacific Ocean. In this article, a review is made on the biology and diversity of these species, their distribution in the world and in Mexico, and their reproduction through seeds, rhizomes and plant tissue culture.Las heliconias son especies ornamentales que producen inflorescencias muy apreciadas en la floricultura. Se pueden cultivar para producir flores de corte, o pueden ser plantadas en parques y jardines como parte de arreglos paisajísticos. Además de sus inflorescencias, las heliconias producen follaje útil para diversos fines, y sus rizomas pueden ser usados como alimento o medicamento. Se estima que existen unas 250 especies del único género, Heliconia, dentro de la familia Heliconiaceae del orden de las Zingiberales, distribuidas principalmente en América tropical, y algunas islas del Océano Pacífico. En este artículo se hace una revisión sobre la biología y la diversidad de estas especies, su distribución en el mundo y en México, y su reproducción a través de semillas, rizomas y cultivo de tejidos vegetales
