PREFERENCIA DE HÁBITAT DE Odocoileus virginianus thomasi MERRIAM EN DOS EJIDOS GANADEROS DEL SURESTE DE MÉXICO

The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus thomasi MERRIAM) is a species with high value throughout México, but little is known about the tropical subspecies. In this study, the habitat preferences of the white-tailed deer in areas with the presence of livestock production in two sites of the Southeast of México are analyzed, and for this purpose, the average livestock density was estimated in ejidos San Joaquín y El Caudillo, in the municipalities of Tenosique and Balancán, Tabasco, México, respectively. The method of fixed-transect plots was used, where tracks of the species were recorded. The percentage of habitat availability was estimated, and the square Chi test was applied to identify whether there were differences between the use and availability, as well as the Bonferroni intervals to contrast the expected and observed use. In San Joaquín, the white-tailed deer preferred the habitat of pucte semi-evergreen medium forest, while in El Caudillo it was the savannah-pastureland. Habitat preferences can be the result of protection coverage and food availability. Hunting is a factor that could influence the habitat preference of deer.El venado cola blanca (Odocoileus virginianus thomasi MERRIAM) es una especie con alto valor en todo México; sin embargo, se conoce poco sobre las subespecies tropicales. En este estudio se analizan las preferencias del hábitat del venado cola blanca en áreas con presencia de ganado en dos sitios del sureste de México y para ello se estimó la densidad promedio de ganado en los ejidos de San Joaquín y El Caudillo en los municipios de Tenosique y Balancán, Tabasco, México, respectivamente. Se utilizó el método de parcelas en transectos fijos en los que se registraron rastros de la especie. Se estimó el porcentaje de disponibilidad del hábitat; se aplicó la prueba de Chi-cuadrada para identificar si existían diferencias entre el uso y la disponibilidad, así como intervalos de Bonferroni para contrastar el uso esperado y observado. En San Joaquín el venado cola blanca prefirió el hábitat de Selva mediana subperennifolia de pucte, mientras que en El Caudillo fue la sabana-potrero. Las preferencias de hábitat pueden deberse a la cobertura de protección y disponibilidad de alimento. La cacería es un factor que podría influenciar en la preferencia del hábitat de los venados
