CONSIDERACIONES DE BIENESTAR ANIMAL EN LAS ESTRATEGIAS PARA LA DISMINUCIÓN DE LA PRODUCCIÓN DE METANO ENTÉRICO POR RUMIANTES

There is a need to significantly increase food production to meet the needs of a population in constant growth. Nevertheless, livestock activity is one of the main generators of greenhouse gases (GHG): carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), with methane being the most important both for its impact on the environment and for the amount produced by ruminants. This situation is one of the great challenges of global bioethics and has led to the search for alternatives that allow reducing methane emissions and therefore their impact on the environment. However, some strategies are in conflict with the principles of animal welfare, causing some damage to ruminants and human health. This document makes a brief analysis of some strategies and their impact on the welfare of ruminants.Existe la necesidad de incrementar considerablemente la producción de alimentos para abastecer las necesidades de una población en constante crecimiento. Sin embargo, la actividad pecuaria es una de las principales generadoras de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI): dióxido de carbono (CO2), metano (CH4) y óxido nitroso (N2O), siendo el metano el más importante tanto por su impacto en el medio ambiente como por la cantidad producida por los rumiantes. Esta situación constituye uno de los grandes retos de la bioética global y ha conducido a la búsqueda de alternativas que permitan disminuir las emisiones de metano y por tanto su impacto en el medio ambiente. No obstante, algunas estrategias se contraponen con los principios de bienestar animal, ocasionando algún daño a los rumiantes y a la salud humana.
