EFFECTS OF CALISTHENIC EXERCISES ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVEL AND DEPRESSION IN BREAST CANCER WOMEN WITH DIFFERENT TREATMENTS

Purpose: In breast cancer, some of the side effects and complications can lead to decrease in functional capacity and physical activity level and an increase in the incidence of depression. The exercises made during the chemotherapy provide the physical, functional and psychological support of the individuals. This study aimed to investigate the effects of calisthenic exercises on the level of physical activity and depression in women with breast cancer. Methods: Fifteen female who completed surgery and receiving chemotherapy in breast cancer (Mastectomy+Chemotherapy Group, mean age 41.07 +/- 4.66 years) and 15 females who were undergoing chemotherapy (Chemotherapy Group, mean age 43.63 +/- 5.25 years) were included in the study. During chemotherapy, both groups were received calisthenic exercises for 12 weeks, two days a week, at a maximal heart rate of 60-80%. Demographic variables, upper extremity grip strength, and normal joint movements were recorded, and postural analysis was done. The physical activity level was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ), and depression levels were evaluated using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Evaluations were repeated before and after the treatment. Results: In women who were doing calisthenic exercises, physical activity levels were significantly increased (p<0.05).
