Agriculture plays an important role in the border area. This must be taken into account in developing strategies to promote economic and social development. Growth segments in agriculture are food processing and marketing of agricultural products. Income supplements to the predominantly small farms have gained in importance in boosting income. If Austria joins the EC, it is important that this border area be recognized as a disadvantage region.
