This paper reports on the response to an introductory programming language survey posted on the ICS Higher Education Academy Website in September 2005. Of the 120 institutions contacted there were 52 responses from 44 institutions. Based upon these responses, the survey found that Java was the most widely used language followed by C++ and a mix of 8 other languages. They also found that an ‘object-late ’ approach was preferred to an ‘objectfirst’ approach when teaching object-oriented (OO) programming and that non-OO languages are used more extensively on business related courses than others. The paper concludes with a discussion of these and other findings
