ABSTRACT: This paper presents an overview of current practices and development initiatives in the field of Enterprise Architecture, focusing on their underlying concepts and principles. The paper gives a brief historic overview of the field, followed by a description of ongoing initiatives to transform from enterprise architecture methodologies used by consultants and managers to architectures that also guide and support new ways of developing, executing and managing computing solutions. To conclude the paper presents an outline of existing architecting research approaches, and draws some preliminary conclusions. Based on this survey, some recommendations for future research are discussed.
