Multiwavelet, a new notion addition to wavelet theory, offer simultaneous orthogonality, symmetry, and short support, which are not possible with scalar two-band wavelet systems. This paper describes a new approach to characterize texture image at multiresolution using the discrete multiwavelet transform. Classification experiments with 20 Brodatz textures indicate that the proposed approach is superior to the method based on standard scalar wavelet transform. 1
