This thesis traces and analyses the nature of the relationship between geopolitical theory and United States strategic policy from 1890 to the end of the Carter administration, with particular attention being paid to the post-1945 period. The first part of the thesis will examine the origins and meaning of geopolitical theory and arguments about the theory's utility. Specifically the development of classical geopolitical theory will be looked at. In addition, the history of German geopolitics will be scrutinized. There are two reasons for this: first to gauge the extent to which it has a continuity with classical geopolitical theory.
