In this study, a new approach for characterisation of the mechanical behaviours of cement paste at micrometre scale is developed. The new approach includes fabrication of the specimens using focused ion beam milling and loading of the specimens using atomic force microscopy. We demonstrate that the new approach provides an effective method for measuring the mechanical properties of cement-based materials at micrometre scale with sufficient accuracy
