We assess the performance of real-time video delivery within the context of transport protocol support and efficiency. We mainly focus on real-time QoS management in heterogeneous wired/wireless networks. We investigate real-time video requirements versus the QoS provided by the underlying network. Furthermore, we analyze some representative congestion control mechanisms, which are suitable for preserving the fundamental QoS guarantees for time-sensitive traffic. Based on simulation results, we quantify video delivery reaching several conclusions on TCP/UDP efficiency in such environments. Finally, we identify the mechanisms that manage to alleviate most of the impairments caused by the network heterogeneity. 1
