Abstract. Simulation is a unique learning environment, as it allows participants to experience critical care interventions in a ‘safe ’ environment. A good understanding of educational theory and instructional design is required to ensure meaningful learning is experienced. Simulation allows a variety of learning theories to be applied due to the wide variety and complexity of the clinical situations presented. Understanding how we learn allows us to tailor simulation to individuals and groups. Once a theory or theories have been chosen for the particular area of focus within the simulation environment, a structured design for the education basis must also be taken.
