This paper aims to show the interaction and performance of a commercial database; Objectivity/DB (Objectivity Inc.) with a HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management) systems; Sony Peta Serve. Experiences of building a 100 Gigabyte prototype database on top of the HSM system with Sony tape library robotics are reported. A test of making objects in the database shows the performance on the HSM and on pure disks was almost equivalent. In database access tests, the performances on HSM was less than that on pure disks. However, the database with the HSM still got compatible speed with conventional sequential tape access in addition to the Object Orient Database system merits
