By reducing the effects of wavefront phase corrugation caused by atmospheric turbulence, spa-tial filtering can redunce the uncertainties in visibility observations with optical/IR interferom-eters. The aim of the work described in this Thesis was to investigate the use of spatial filtering on astronomical optical interferometers and to construct an optimised filtering solution for the Cambridge Optical Aperture Synthesis Telescope (COAST). A numerical simulation was carried out to predict the performance of several different forms of spatial filtering.
