In a cluster of workstations, many machines are typically idle at any given time. These idle workstations represent a substantial amount of processing power, many times greater than what is available to any single user. In the past, several process migration mechanisms have been developed to share the CPU cycles of these idle workstations, but they all have some limitations. Some mechanisms are either not transparent, or they are not compatible with UNIX. Others require recompiling or relinking of existing programs.
