Bandwidth Allocation Algorithms for All-Optical Networks Vijay Kumar Recent years have witnessed strong growth in the demand for communication bandwidth. All-optical WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) networks have emerged as a very powerful new communication technology that promises to increase data transmission rates by several orders of magnitude. Exploiting this potential of WDM networks requires efficient algorithms for the management of network resources. For most topologies of interest, the problem of optimal utilisation of bandwidth is NP-hard. The design of good approximation algorithms in this area has been the focus of a great deal of recent research effort
