For mobile users of the Internet it is desirable to utilize services without interruptions or change of IP-addresses even when moving their portable devices. IP Mobility Support (Mobile IP) addresses this desire by allowing to reach a mobile node with an unchanging IP-address, even when it moves throughout the Internet. In this paper we give a general overview of the Mobile IP Protocol and how it works. We also address security concerns and mechanism as well as problems concerning performance and reliability when implementing Mobile IP. Where available, solutions to these problems are presented. Further we discuss where Mobile IP can usefully be applied or where traditional methods of portable computing still offer advantages
