The resource and timescale constraints imposed by TLTP on the production of courseware for music in higher education have, effectively, specified the use of multi-media toolkits. Although this has restricted the type of support that can be offered to students, by ruling out the use of detailed on-line student modelling, use is still made of knowledge of the cognitive skills that have been shown empirically to be active. For two styles of courseware module, how the skills of knowledge acquisition and analysis are developed and supported, without recourse to computationally intense modelling are described.
