Recently, in the literature, the efficiency of IP traffic, both TCP and UDP, over ATM has been analysed based on the calculation of ATM related overhead bytes during transmission of IP datagram. It was concluded that larger datagrams have better efficiency over smaller ones. The effect of cell loss was not considered in the earlier work. TCP/IP retransmits lost data and will contain many retransmitted cells in ATM networks with high cell loss rate (CLR). In this paper, the retransmission of cells due to cell loss is considered as overhead. It is found that larger datagrams cause more retransmission and concluded that `too' large datagrams actually result in less efficient traffic. M.
