It is clear that there are a large number of scientific applications now benefitting from good performance on a variety of parallel computers. The results indicate the differences between the architectures, both in the provision of virtual memory and local disc, but highlight the importance of fast message passing with low latency for algorithm development, especially in areas requiring conjugate gradient solvers or parallel FFTs. We highlight some of these findings, and indicate some optimisations which might be possible using available numerical libraries and message-passing tools.
