We present the split-view: a hierarchical tiled view approach for managing multiple views within a single window. Our method for managing multiple views is based on three principles: (i) hierarchical view organization, (ii) rectangular tiled layout, and (iii) multi-view operations. Hierarchical view organization supports user structuring their views according to task hierarchy. The rectangular tiled layout allows some flexibility in the placement of views and allows views to conform to their content. Multi-view operators together with hierarchical view organization allow rapid task-switching and reduce the number of view operations.
