Using Java to Present Fault Tolerance in Distributed Systems by Saurabh Jain Many current applications execute in a distributed computing environment. Programming of such systems is hard because of concurrency, asynchrony, faulttolerance and real-time requirements. The programming can be simplified if the messages through which the processors in these systems communicate are totally ordered, rather than causally ordered or unordered. The Totem system, designed and developed at the University of California, Santa Barbara, provides reliable totally ordered delivery of messages.
