The major part of the paper provides a comprehensive account of Peirce's post-1900 theory of abduction. Even though we will not lay claim to completeness, the account does aim at bringing together various different strands of discussion in Peirce's work, showing their interaction in weaving a more coherent picture of his thoughts on abductive reasoning as manifest after the turn of the century. The discussion is of a historical nature, rather than a critical assessment. Only in the end we take in a more analytical stance, intending to draw consequences from Peirce's ideas to modelling abduction in artificial intelligence
