As computers become faster and offer larger memories, scientific simulations have moved from 2 dimensions to 3 dimensions. Quite often the results that scientists and engineers obtain are described as fields of scalar values; e.g., pressure, computed or sampled on a 3-dimensional grid. The geometry of such data is reviewed. Computer graphics methods of displaying these 3 dimensional fields is discussed, focusing on the use of both contour surfaces and more direct techniques
