This is a report for a corresponding seminar held in the course Parallel Computer Architecture given by the Department of Computer Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. The report will give some clues why we need parallel and distributed real-time systems. It will focus on problems encountered when building such systems, and ideas about ways to deal with them. Architectures, communication, operating systems, scheduling, programming tools and verification tools will be considered. The current situation will be exemplified, and a short discussion about future development will end the report
