Introduction One approach to the accurate computation of realistic engineering flows is that of large-eddy simulation 1 (LES) in which scales larger than some cutoff, say k = k c in wavenumber space, are computed directly while the subgrid scales are modelled. For the construction of subgrid-scale (SGS) models for large-eddy simulation (LES), the main issue is the formulation of physically realistic models of the dynamical interaction between the resolved scales and the subgrid range of scales. The latter may be termed the "fine scales" of the turbulence and, for present purposes, may be taken to extend from somewhere within the inertial range (at large Reynolds numbers) down to the Kolmororov scale j = ( 3 =ffl) 1=4 where ...
