Handling some difficult problems in morpho-syntactic modeling of Korean using categorial grammar

Korean Combinatory Categorial Grammar (KCCG) is an extended combinatory categorial grammar formalism that can capture the syntax and interpretation of the "relative free" word order, long distance scrambling and other characteristics of Korean. The KCCG formalism can uniformly handle word order variation among arguments and adjuncts within a clause as well as in complex clauses and across clause boundaries, i.e., long distance scrambling. The approach we develop takes advantage of CCG's ability of type raising and composition along with (Lee et al., 1994; Lee et al., 1997)'s ability of variable categories and unordered argument modeling for relatively free word order treatment. 1 Introduction CCG was developed by (Ades and Steedman, 1982; Steedman, 1985; Steedman, 1987) to account for coordination and long distance dependencies in extraction without the use of movement rules or trace.
