A computational procedure is developed to analyze the out-of-plane motion of pretensioned moving paper webs. The standard Galerkin finite element method is employed along with the Newmark direct time integration scheme for the solution of the governing equation. It is demonstrated that when the tension is the dominant restoring force, this displacement-based finite element formulation will not introduce the well-known shear locking.
