Transfer function models for the description of multidimensional physical systems have recently been introduced. They provide an alternative to the conventional representation by partial differential equations. Multidimensional transfer functions are input-output models for physical phenomena with more than one independent variable (e.g. time and space). They allow to treat the effects of initial conditions, boundary conditions, and excitation functions on the resulting output signal separately. Transfer function models are an excellent starting point for the development of discrete-variable representations of physical systems.
