KARAKTERISASI TOKOH UTAMA DALAM NOVEL IBUK KARYA IWAN SETYAWAN

Characterization is a portrayal of a character that is portrayed through a unit of story in the form of an author's narrative or dialogue between characters, either directly or indirectly. There are two problems in this study, namely (1) the form of direct characterization in the novel of Ibuk, created by Iwan Setyawan; and (2) indirect forms of characterization in the novel of Ibuk created by Iwan Setyawan. This novel is mesmerizng to discuss because there is good characterization to emulate. The method applied in this study is qualitative with structural evaluation. The data in this novel is a story unit in the form of an author's narrative or character dialogue. While the source of data in this study is Novel of Ibuk, created by Iwan Setyawan. Research indicators contain important points in the theory. The instrument in this study was text observation by encoding data and then grouping based on direct or indirect characterization. The research technique used is documentation by reading, managing, classifying, describing, and presenting data. Then facilitated in data analysis techniques consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions.\ud The discussion obtained about the Characterization of the Main Characters in the Novel of Ibuk created by Iwan Setyawan is, as follows, (1) Direct characterization is found in the level of welfare of the characters that emerge from the figures of Father, Mother, and the Child. The level of prosperity that arises is in the form of the influence of Father. and Mother’s hard work on his family environment. One of these influences appears on the character of the Child. Through the physical form of the character experienced by the main character, several aspects emerge, such as manly, handsome, thick eyebrows by the character of the father, then fair skinned, strong, and beautiful by the character of Mother, and a thin and small body by the character of the Child; and (2) indirect characterization is found for the character dialogue through the speakers and the identity of the speaker by the figures of Father, Mother and Child then pressure by the character when he is upset because his vehicle often brake down, and the actions of the characters such as facial expressions by Father and Mother, the motivation underlying of Father, Mother and the Child, and the behavior of the characters
