STRATEGY IN TRANSLATING SONGS USED BY STUDENTS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT IN UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

Translation strategy is a procedure for the solutions of a problem an individual faced when translating from one language into another. Translators will face many challenges in translating a song. To overcome this challenge, the translators use various translation strategies. This study aimed to investigate the translation strategies applied by students to translate a song based on Franzon’s strategy. In order to gain more information about the strategies applied, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research and employed semi-structured interview. The participants were the students of English language education department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang academic year of 2015/2016 in Translation 1 course. The result revealed that the most used strategies were writing new lyrics to the original music and adapting the translation to the original music. Furthermore, the researcher found that although the translators tended to translate English to Indonesian with fewer words while translate Indonesia into English with more words, the translators always maintained the number of the syllables the same between SL and TL to make it singable like the original song
