We study the compression of atmospheric data by spherical wavelets. We show that as well the compression error as the number of non-vanishing wavelet coefficients can be controlled a priori. The efficiency of the compression algorithm strongly depends on the smoothness of the data. Numerical examples illustrate our theoretical results.
