Das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist die Entwicklung der Tempus- und Aspektmarkierung in der italienischen Interlanguage zu erforschen. Die Konzeptualisierung von Tempus und Aspekt wird als Teil von der grammatischen Kompetenz angesehen, die als „Kenntnis der grammatischen Mittel einer Sprache und die Fähigkeit, diese zu verwenden“ (Europarat, 2001, p. 113) definiert werden kann. Da Kompetenz nicht direkt beobachtbar ist, wird in dieser Studie Kompetenz durch Beobachtung der Sprachproduktion erschlossen (Ellis & Barkhuizen, 2005, p. 6).
