With a strongly connected structure of KU, the process of assessing someone's knowledge state can be highly efficient, such that only a few KU need to be known in order to draw conclusions about the complete knowledge state. However, knowledge structures are difficult to construct through a process of knowledge engineering with one or more domain experts. We argue that the lack of an automatic means of constructing knowledge structures, or any domain models for that matter, constitutes a serious obstacle to user expertise modeling models. The major problem with hand build models is that they are often too tedious and time consuming, and they are also subject to judgment biases. Thus, a key feature of the POKS technique is that it permits the induction of knowledge structures from a small number of empirical data cases. The empirical induction technique is based, in part, on statistical hypothesis testing over conditional probabilit
