How Well Are High-End DSPs Suited for the AES Algorithms? AES Algorithms on the TMS320C6x DSP

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has announced that one of the design criteria for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm was the ability to e#ciently implement it in hardware and software. Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) are a highly attractive option for software implementations of the AES finalists since they perform certain arithmetic operations at high speeds, they are often smaller and more energy-e#cient than general purpose processors, and they are commonly used for the rapidly growing market of embedded applications. In this contribution we investigate how well modern high-end DSPs are suited for the five final candidates chosen after the second AES conference.
