This chapter addresses research ethics in doctoral research. It sets out the steps involved in seeking ethical approval starting with getting to grips with relevant institutional ethics process. Drawing on my experience as researcher and supervisor, I highlight how considering doctoral research as three-dimensional chess will help develop understanding of how researcher, participants and ethics are inter-related. Embracing ethics as a process of ongoing reflection, I offer key insights to assist in preparing an ethics application, what to do if things don’t go according to plan along the way, pitfalls to avoid and the benefits of securing approval
