Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) are two related neurodegenerative diseases, with a continuous clinical spectrum. A common feature between the two diseases is the abnormal cytoplasmic localization and the aggregation of the TAR DNA binding protein 43 (TDP-43), in affected cells (i.e both upper and lower motoneurons for ALS and neurons of the frontal and temporal lobes, for FTD). Pathological TDP-43 aggregates are mainly composed by its C-terminal fragments of 35\u2009kDa (TDP-35) and 25\u2009kDa (TDP-25), as a result of caspase 3-dependent cleavage.
