This paper contributes to the debate on interorganizational collaborative relationships by advancing a knowledge-based interpretation of why companies collaborate, based on a continuum ranging from knowledge access to knowledge transfer to knowledge co-production. Founding on the relational behavior of companies operating in a range of industries, I discuss distinctive features, objectives and strategic/organizational pros and cons of strategic alliances and interfirm networks primarily focused on: (1) accessing the knowledge base of partners, (2) learning from partners, and (3) coproducing new knowledge by interorganizational interaction. Some final remarks suggest avenues for future research
