Folliculogenesis encompasses the process of oocyte development, allowing for the growth and maturation of a competent oocyte. Communication between the oocyte and the somatic granulosa cells surrounding it is crucial for the success of this process. Throughout growth, a thick extra-cellular layer termed the zona pellucida is present between the granulosa cells and the oocyte. In order to maintain communication between the two, granulosa cells establish physical contact with the oocyte via actin-containing filopodia-like structures known as transzonal projections (TZPs).
